The Secret Challenge Game That Had Our Entire Family Suspicious of Each Other 😂

We recently had a big family reunion, and I wanted some kind of game that could happen in the background throughout the entire day instead of requiring all 42 people to stop what they were doing and play a traditional game together.

I had watched Million Dollar Secret and loved the basic idea of everyone watching everyone else, trying to figure out who might secretly be up to something.

So I stole a little inspiration from that concept and turned it into a game our whole family could play.

And it was HILARIOUS.

By the end of the day, everyone was suspicious of completely normal behavior, people were defending themselves against ridiculous accusations, and somehow—with challenges happening right in front of us all day—only ONE person correctly figured out someone else's challenge.

How the Secret Challenge Game Works

The setup is really simple.

I made enough slips of paper for everyone at our reunion. Most of them said something along the lines of:

“You’re a guesser! No challenge to complete today.”

But mixed in were a handful of Secret Challenge cards.

If you drew a challenge, you had the entire day to complete it without anyone figuring out what you were doing.

Everyone else had another job:

Pay attention.

Anything weird could be a challenge.

Someone asking an unusual question? Suspicious.

Someone bringing up the same random celebrity for the third time? Definitely suspicious.

Someone suddenly moving things around the house? WHAT ARE THEY DOING?!

😂

And that's what made this game so funny. Once everyone knew secret challenges were happening, completely innocent behavior suddenly looked suspicious.

We Made a Separate Bowl for the Younger Kids

Because our group ranged from kids all the way up to adults in their 70s, I made one little adjustment that worked really well.

I had a separate kid bowl that contained only Guesser cards.

That way, the younger kids still got to participate in watching everyone and making accusations, but they didn't have to worry about secretly completing a challenge all day.

The preteens were mixed in with everyone else, though, so they had the possibility of pulling an actual challenge.

You could easily adjust this depending on your group. If you have kids who would LOVE having a secret mission, throw them into the regular bowl. If they're too young to understand the secrecy part, let them be guessers.

Our Secret Challenges

The key is choosing challenges that are weird enough to be funny but normal enough that someone could potentially get away with them.

Some of ours were:

  • Mention Dolly Parton in five separate conversations with different people.

  • Get three people to say, “Are you serious?” without asking them to say it.

  • Learn five people's middle names without explaining why you're asking.

  • Move four objects from one room or area to another without getting caught.

  • Put a small removable sticker on four different people without them noticing.

  • Mention something your kindergarten teacher said about you on your report card three separate times during the day.

Watching people attempt these while trying to act completely normal was SO funny.

But what was even funnier was watching everyone else become detectives.

The Best Part Happens at the End

That evening, we all circled up.

We went around the group and let everyone share the things they had noticed throughout the day that seemed suspicious.

Then came the accusations.

Someone would point at another person and say what they thought their secret challenge had been.

And the accused person got a chance to defend themselves.

This was probably my favorite part of the entire game because by this point everyone had spent HOURS analyzing completely normal interactions.

My favorite accusation was someone being absolutely convinced that another person's secret challenge was to wear their shirt backwards.

Except...

Their shirt actually WAS backwards.

And it was a complete accident. 😂😂😂

They had unknowingly spent the day looking incredibly suspicious while doing absolutely nothing.

After all that investigating, accusing and defending, only one person actually guessed someone's real challenge correctly.

Which made all of the completely wrong theories even funnier.

Why This Game Works So Well

What I love about this game is that it doesn't take over the gathering.

You don't need everyone sitting around a table for an hour.

You hand out the cards at the beginning, explain the rules, and then everyone goes about their day.

People can eat, swim, talk, play other games—whatever you were already planning to do.

Meanwhile, this little game is quietly happening underneath everything else.

And because people are watching one another, it actually creates more interaction throughout the day.

Someone you might not normally talk to suddenly wants to know your middle name.

Someone keeps finding reasons to bring up Dolly Parton.

And everyone starts paying WAY too much attention to what everyone else is doing. 😂

This Isn't Just a Family Reunion Game

We played this with our extended family, but afterward I realized there are so many groups this would work for.

You could use it at a:

Family reunion • friend weekend • birthday party • holiday gathering • church group • youth event • team retreat • corporate event • staff training • conference • work party

For a corporate retreat or training, I would just change the challenges to fit the environment.

Instead of putting stickers on Grandma or randomly discussing kindergarten report cards, you could have challenges like getting three coworkers to use a certain word, getting someone to tell you about their first job, subtly moving an object to three different locations, or working a ridiculous phrase naturally into multiple conversations.

It becomes an icebreaker without feeling like an icebreaker, which might be my favorite part.

Nobody has to stand up and tell the room their favorite color. 😂

How Many Secret Challenges Should You Have?

You definitely don't want everyone to have one.

The entire game works because most people are guessers and only a small number are secretly completing missions.

For our group of 42, I only mixed in a handful of challenge cards.

That's enough to make everyone suspicious without making every weird thing someone does an actual challenge.

And honestly, the false accusations are half the fun.

How Long Should You Play?

We gave everyone essentially the whole day.

I liked this much better than putting a short time limit on it because people didn't have to frantically complete their challenge.

They could wait for the right opportunity and try to work things naturally into conversations.

Then that evening, we circled up for the accusations, defenses and reveals.

If you're using this at a shorter gathering, you could easily play for a few hours instead.

For a corporate event or training, you could hand the cards out in the morning and do the reveal at the end of the day.

Want to Play It With Your Group?

Below you'll find two printable versions of the game that you can download, print, cut apart and use with your own group.

Family + Friends Edition

This is the version closest to the one we played at our family reunion. It includes 30 Secret Challenges, Guesser cards, special Secret Detective cards for younger kids, blank cards for adding your own challenges, and simple instructions for the host.

Corporate + Team Edition

I also created a version specifically for corporate events, staff trainings, retreats and other group gatherings. The challenges are workplace-appropriate but still funny—and a lot of them secretly get people talking to coworkers they might not normally interact with.

For either version, don't use all 30 challenge cards at once! Choose a small handful of your favorites and mix those in with enough Guesser cards for everyone else. And don't tell anyone how many Secret Challenges are actually in play. The uncertainty is half the fun.

Then give everyone a few hours—or the entire day—to become suspicious of absolutely everything their friends, family members or coworkers do.

At the end, circle up, make your accusations, let everyone defend their suspicious behavior, and finally reveal who actually had a challenge.

And before you accuse someone of secretly wearing their shirt backwards...

maybe check whether they just got dressed wrong that morning. 😂
